God’s vision for establishing the institution of marriage is to form a formidable team of husband and wife for His kingdom. Adam, the first man, was given a life assignment before he was given a wife assignment. Vision precedes people, just as problems precede solution. “Then the LORD God took Adam, the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it” Genesis 2:15. It was after the vision was given to Adam that his inadequacies were discovered. Marriage was therefore instituted to address what was wrong with man, “It is not good for man to be alone” Genesis 2:18.
Notice that God’s response to Adam’s aloneness was not to give him more people but to give him one person who can complement him and fit into him as a missing piece in the puzzle of human engineering. Notice that compatibility, not similarity or physical attributes is God’s only requirement for matchmaking a couple and building oneness.
