As Certified Marriage and Master Mentors, we face several challenges, limitations and brick walls in discharging our duties. One of such is having to burrow through ethical challenges. The goal of the counselors is to ensure the well-being and happiness of our clients. However, due to the fact that we counsel couples as a unit, in which case we are dealing with 2 individuals who have differing needs and who are in a conflict, we are faced with ethical challenges when the desires and interests of our clients conflict. For example, if a husband is physically or verbally abusive to his wife and has no real hope of changing his behavior, you may run into ethical issues advising the wife to stay in the relationship. The question is “How do you navigate the ethical challenges in couple counseling/mentoring?”
